Quick & Easy Fall Table Decor

Switching out your table decor for fall can be quick and easy. Here are two simple options.

Buy a few real or faux mini pumpkins (around $1 each) and combine them with a bowl of treats like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Although it's unlikely any will be left by the time Halloween rolls around, they will serve as functional decor!

Use a bouquet of real or fake sunflowers to decorate your table. I paired mine with one of my favorite candle scents, ginger peach.

Farmhouse Flowers: Mums for Fall

The pansies I planted this spring were looking tired and it was time for an upgrade. Nothing says fall like some mums! I chose a big yellow one for the pot by my back door.

I planted a mix of gold and light purple minis for the barrel by the trellis. My spike plant was still going strong so I left it in the barrel, and it looks great! (Notice that purpley-red flower growing on the ground? No idea where that came from, but it's been blooming nicely all summer.)

Marsala and Mustard Floral Prints for Fall Home Decor

It all started with a custom order. We made an odd sized table runner and a table cloth for a customer because she loved this mustard and marsala floral print on a cream background.

We've continued to sell lots of table runners and pillow covers in the print. Anne picked up a few more yards of the fabric last week. It is great for fall, with the reds and yellows, but the floral helps keep a summer touch.

Farmhouse Flowers: Phlox

The #FarmhouseFriday blog post series left off with a quick tour of some of the flowers in my yard and garden. Back then the lilies were in bloom. Now we're down to the phlox, which is a very pretty assortment of some of my favorite purple hues!

I especially enjoyed using these flowers as a backdrop for some new pillow covers. This photo shoot was challenging because it was hard for me to remember to focus on the pillows, not the flowers!

Making Your Flowers Last All Summer

Annual flowers are great. They had a bright spot of color outside your home. But usually by the time August is around the corner, they start looking a little tired, if they're still alive! Here are a few tips I use to keep my pansies looking great.

First, I choose pansies because they're okay to plant early. A late frost, which could come in May or even June in upstate New York, won't hurt them.

Of course the first tip is to provide the correct amounts of water and sunlight for your plants. Potted plants usually need more water than you think. A good daily soaking helps. So does the occasional dose of fertilizer like MiracleGro.

One of the best tips Anne gave me is to pinch back any stems where the blossoms have gone by. This gives the plant energy to make new blooms!

With pansies you can tell the difference between old and new by looking at the end of the stem. An old one will have dead petals or nothing at all, while a new one will have a colored bud waiting to open.

Happy gardening!

Farmhouse Yard & Garden Photos

The past few weeks of reliving the house's original wallpaper, removing it, choosing paint colors, and actually painting has been pretty intense. This week's #FarmhouseFriday post is just some photos of the yard and garden! We have lots of nice flowers thanks to the previous owner's perennial plantings.

And if you missed it, here's yesterday's blog post about berry picking.

Berry Picking Season

We didn't have much of a strawberry season this summer because the deer ate the berries and the plants. But now the golden raspberries, wild blackberries, and blueberries are starting to come on! Here are a few pictures of our berry patches with a cat in a tree thrown in.

Peonies in Our Perennial Garden

Peonies are popular and easy to grow. The last of our peonies were washed away in a rainstorm last week, but I was able to take some photos before they were totally lost. Here are a few!

Irises in our Perennial Garden

I love the established flower gardens that came with our home. Iris time is always especially cool. Out of almost nowhere these huge blossoms pop open.

We have five different colors:
