I like to choose reversible runners that have coordinating color schemes. That way either side is sure to blend well with the rest of your decor.
Another option is to choose a runner with the same print on each side, but in different colors.
Another pro of reversible runners? Here's something that's happened to me... Guests were due to arrive in just a few minutes. I realized the runner had a big stain on it from who-knows-what. Because it was reversible, I was able to flip it (the stain didn't go all the way through) and nobody knew!
